About the Clearwater Band of Ojibwe

The Clearwater Band of Ojibwe is a federally recognized sovereign tribal nation located in northern Minnesota. Our people have inhabited the Clearwater region for over a thousand years, maintaining a deep spiritual and cultural connection to this land.

Our History

The Clearwater Band is part of the broader Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) Nation. Our ancestors signed treaties with the United States government in the mid-1800s that established the Clearwater Reservation and preserved our rights to hunt, fish, and gather on ceded territories.

Government

The tribe is governed by an elected Tribal Council consisting of a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary-Treasurer, and four district representatives. Council members serve four-year staggered terms.

Our Values

  • Respect for the land, water, and all living beings
  • Preservation and revitalization of Ojibwe language and culture
  • Self-determination and tribal sovereignty
  • Community well-being and mutual support
  • Honoring the wisdom of our elders
