Tribal governance and sovereignty celebration

The Clearwater Band of Ojibwe marked the 40th anniversary of its Self-Governance Compact with the federal government, celebrating four decades of tribal self-determination and sovereignty.

A History of Self-Governance

In 1986, the Clearwater Band became one of the first tribes in the nation to enter into a self-governance compact, assuming control of federal programs previously administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Achievements

  • Built and operates a tribally run health clinic serving 8,000 patients annually
  • Established an Ojibwe language immersion school with 95% graduation rate
  • Created over 500 jobs through tribal enterprises
  • Protected and restored 15,000 acres of culturally significant lands

"Self-governance has allowed us to design programs that truly serve our people and reflect our values," said Chairwoman Whitehawk during the anniversary ceremony.
